Junior Designer

The Design Files is hiring : Junior Designer

The Design Files is looking for a full-time Junior Designer.

This is an opportunity to be part of a small, passionate and highly creative team at one of Australia’s most popular online publications.

This is a full-time role, based primarily at our studio in Collingwood, Melbourne, commencing ASAP (August / Sept 2022) with a 3 month (paid) trial period.

Role Description

The Junior Designer works within our editorial team, preparing photographs and creating layouts for our daily written content and social media content. Additionally, they work alongside our Art Director to create graphic assets such as client presentations, web ad banners, customised EDMs, and occasionally signage and printed collateral for client projects and special events.

Primarily, our Junior Designer will find themselves working at a computer screen. However, they will also occasionally assist with photoshoots – collecting / sourcing props, and assisting the stylist or Art Director on these shoots from time to time.

As we’re a small team, this is an ‘all hands on deck’ sort of workplace!  Everyone at TDF pitches in when we’re hosting a special event – such as an art exhibition, or pop-up shop etc.

Outside of work, our Junior Designer will ideally have a keen interest in design, art, craft and/or related happenings. You’ll also be an active user and consumer of online media, with your finger on the pulse of new trends in social media and digital content.

The successful candidate will be eager and enthusiastic, self-motivated, organised, and a team player who loves collaborating with others. Most importantly, we’re looking for someone with a ‘can do’ attitude, a co-worker who will bring energy and optimism to our small, hardworking team.

Key Responsibilities

• Work closely with Manager Editor to select and format photographic assets, create photo layouts for all our daily content, create social media assets and custom EDMs.

• Liase with photographers, columnists and PRs to source / receive photos for our stories.

• Maintain and manage our digital photography archive.

• Upload content and prepare story layouts within our content management system.

• Work under the guidance of our Art Director to produce web banners and other digital graphic assets for videos, TDF events, client collaborations and special projects.

• Assist our Art Director and Partnerships Manager to design multi-page PDF presentations and reports for clients.

• Occasionally assist with photoshoots – collecting / sourcing props, assisting the stylist or art director with still life / product / food shoots.

• Assist with our bi-monthly art exhibition series TDF Collect, and other pop-up events.

Desired Skills & Experience

• Strong understanding of and experience using Adobe Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator.

• An understanding of the key social media platforms we use (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Tik Tok)

• Basic experience using Wordpress CMS, Mailchimp and Canva is desired but not imperative.

• Australian driver’s license and a car.

This is a junior role, suited to a recent graduate, or designers with less than 3 years professional experience.

The role is full-time, based primarily in our Collingwood office (with some days working from home as needed), commencing ASAP, with a 12 week trial period.

Salary offered is variable based on skills and experience, and will be negotiated directly via email after all applications are received.

Things to Note

The bulk of the work we do is online / digital, so this role is best suited to a designer with particular interest in digital design. We do also produce printed assets and signage from time to time.

The Junior Designer may be required to assist the stylist / Art Director on some of our photoshoots, and also to assist collecting and returning props. For this reason, the successful applicant will have a driver’s license and a car they can use when required.
