The Design Files is looking for a full-time Junior Designer, commencing May 2026.

This is an opportunity to be part of a passionate and highly creative team at one of Australia’s most popular design publications.

This is a full-time role, based at our studio in Collingwood, Melbourne, commencing Tuesday May 5th with a 3 month (paid) probation period.

Role Description

The Junior Designer works with our Art Director and editorial team, preparing photographs and creating layouts for our daily written content and social media content, as well as our biannual print magazine. Additionally, they create graphic assets such as client presentations, web advertising banners, customised EDMs, short edited videos and simple animated gifs for social media, and occasionally printed collateral for client projects and special events.

As we’re a small team, this is an ‘all hands on deck’ sort of workplace!  Everyone at TDF pitches in when we’re hosting a special event – such as an exhibition or pop-up shop etc. Approximately 3-4 times per year this role may require you to work overtime on an evening or a weekend, if we are hosting a special event such as this.

Outside of work, our Junior Designer will ideally have a keen interest in home interiors and/or architecture, art and craft. You’ll be an active consumer of online media, with your finger on the pulse of new trends in social media and digital content. And of course, we’re looking for someone who already knows and loves The Design Files, and has a passion for Australian design, homes and creative people.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, self-motivated, organised, and a team player who loves collaborating with others. Most importantly, we’re looking for someone with a ‘can do’ attitude, a co-worker who will bring energy and optimism to our small, hardworking team.

Key Responsibilities

• Work under the guidance of the Art Director to select and format photographic assets, create photo layouts for all our daily content and create social media assets.

• Liase with photographers, columnists and PRs to source / receive photos for our stories.

• Maintain and manage our digital photography archive.

• Upload content and prepare story layouts within our content management system.

• Create short edited video assets and animated assets for Instagram and Tik Tok.

• Upload content to our Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest.

• Design multi-page PDF presentations and reports for clients using InDesign and/or Canva.

• Occasionally assist with photoshoots – collecting / sourcing props, assisting the stylist or art director with still life / product / food shoots.

• Assist with pop-up events.

Desired Skills & Experience

• University or TAFE qualification in graphic design, communication design or similar. (Please note this role is not suited to interior design graduates, it is exclusively a graphic design role).

• At least 1 year experience working in a junior design role at a creative agency, publisher or other creative business.

• An understanding of The Design Files - ideally you’ve been following TDF for a while and know what we’re all about!

• Strong understanding of and experience using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Indesign, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe After Effects.

• An understanding of the key social media platforms we use (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Tik Tok)

• Basic experience using Wordpress CMS, Mailchimp and Canva is desired but not imperative.

• Australian driver’s license and access to a car highly preferable.

This is a junior role, suited to designers with between 1 - 2 years of professional experience.
